Physical activity is just as important for a growing child as it is for an adult. During our adult years physical fitness is vital in order to maintain a healthy weight and a healthy body. Many of us overlook the fact that children also need physical activity to develop a healthy body and a healthy mind. Aside from the numerous health benefits of physical activity, children who exercise sleep better at night and handle challenges with more ease.
Some of the reasons why physical activity is beneficial for children are: building and maintaining healthy bones, controlling weight, building lean muscle, increasing flexibility and reducing fat. With today’s electronically advanced society, many children spend their day surfing the net, watching television, or playing video games. These bad habits often lead to weight issues and even serious health problems in the future. If a child does not lead an active lifestyle, chances are that the child will remain inactive as an adult. Hence it is important to instill the value of physical activity while the child is still young.
Physical activity also aids in developing a healthy mind in children. Due to physical activity, children may experience reduced feelings of stress and anxiety. Children have a way of becoming easily irritated and they are more likely to experience feelings of anxiety during a stressful situation. Exercise can help children relieve some of the built up tension. Furthermore, exercise can aid in building a child’s self-esteem. It is usually during physical activity, such as recess, that children feel comfortable around each other and build up their self esteem.
So the next time you see your child sitting in front of a video game, encourage him/her to go outside and play. Anything from kicking a ball around to taking the dog for a walk brings your child closer to a healthier body and mind.
